A short recovery. A longer gap.

Stone is measured in people, too.
Employment, generations and labour demand across the supply chain. Our first focus is Massa-Carrara, with documented stone-sector data and a separate national context.
WORKFORCE OBSERVATORY
ISR · Osservatorio Marmo 2025 ↗. 2023 data; published 14 January 2026. Categories sum to 4,242: the 1-worker discrepancy is preserved.
01 / THE BRIEF
A two-minute read. All three signals refer to the Massa-Carrara stone supply chain in 2023.
48 more workers than in 2022. Still 484 fewer than in 2010: −10.2%.
Explore data ↗1,631 employees are aged 50+. There are 336 aged 15–29. Age does not imply imminent retirement.
Explore data ↗552 female employees. This measures workforce composition, not the gender pay gap.
Explore data ↗02 / PEOPLE BEHIND THE STONE
Age, gender and occupations of 3,466 employees. Same area, same year, same denominator.
EMPLOYEE PROFILE · 2023
ISR · original charts ↗. Shares recalculated from published counts.
WORKFORCE STRUCTURE
Employees aged 50+ are almost five times those aged 15–29. A signal for skills and succession planning, not a forecast of sector exits.
03 / THE LONG VIEW
Three annual observations. No invented line through missing years. The comparison follows the ISR provincial scope.
WORKERS · MASSA-CARRARA
2023 — 4,243 workers. Total published in the report.
The 2023 total is up by 48 workers on 2022, but 484 below 2010. Recent recovery and long-term transformation belong in the same picture.
A workforce balance does not reveal how many people were hired or left.
4,727 = 4,243 + 484; 4,195 = 4,243 − 48. Molai reconstructions, not monthly observations.04 / LABOUR MARKET CONTEXT
These figures are not exclusive to stone. They describe labour markets in three north-west Tuscany provinces.
EXCELSIOR · OCTOBER–DECEMBER 2026
ISR / Unioncamere · Excelsior ↗. Published 23 October 2026. Forecasts, not actual hires.
In Massa-Carrara, employers consider 51% of planned entries difficult to fill. This measures recruitment difficulty, not unemployment.
Forecasts, employment and unemployment answer different questions.
ISTAT · release of 29 October 2026 ↗. Different denominators: do not add these rates. They do not yield a stone-specific unemployment rate.
05 / THE EVIDENCE
A first territorial edition, not a national or global stone-workforce census. Each series retains its own period.
| Indicator | Coverage | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Workers & employees | Massa-Carrara · 2023 SOURCE ACQUIRED | ISR supply chain: extraction, processing, technology/abrasives and trade. Broader than quarries and workshops. |
| Labour demand | Three provinces · Q4 2026 SOURCE ACQUIRED | Excelsior survey of planned entries. All sectors, not just stone. |
| Unemployment | Italy · September 2026 SOURCE ACQUIRED | ISTAT context. A stone-specific unemployment rate is unavailable in the sources acquired here. |
| Pay, contracts & exits | Stone-specific series not acquired TO BE DOCUMENTED | No substitute estimate. Contractual minima, actual pay, hires and separations require separate verified datasets. |
The January 2026 ISR report uses 2023 employment data. This is the verified reference here, not a current estimate or a claim that no other data exist.
Activity counts total 4,242 versus 4,243 workers; occupations total 3,460 versus 3,466 employees. Original figures and discrepancies are preserved; shares use the declared total.
Workers at economic units differ from employed residents in the labour-force survey. Planned entries are forecast flows, not stocks or necessarily unique individuals.
No district ranking without matching scope, year and codes. Broad activity divisions may include glass and ceramics. Classification changes require bridging.
